  • Yes but there was always an official one even though it was complete dog shit garbage that didn't matter to the average person that's what they are going to use. They don't care nor think about alternatives. It's easy to forget what the masses think about especially in places like this.

But that's not really the case with decentralized platforms there are a ton of different clients none of them are technically official and pretty much all of them is missing something it's just a matter of what's each one missing. And thats enough to kill usability for most average people

  • And while that's nice, and i will try it. it just highlights another usability problem. Fragmentation, which client should I use? Will that continue to be maintained? Nope it died well time to switch to another one I guess. Lots of problems like that across all decentralized platforms not just lemmy

  • The problem is that the fediverse has genuine usability problems. Even from the perspective of a technical person. I am a sysadmin, and i self host a hilarious amount of things for no reason. Yet even i find the verse frustrating. Discoverability is near non existent, searching is hard, many instances just have duplicate content for popular topics, people don't understand how federation works for the main feed so you get times where stuff like that instance that is only for women pops up on a bunch of different instances Main feed and you have to deal with all the "shutup man this isn't for you!" And then of course there's always the which one do I even make my account on and then even after you do select one there's no guarantee it won't shut down at some random point and you'll be forced to migrate etc.

I've been on lemmy for a while and i still struggle to find content i want sometimes, but things like bluesky? It's easy, i found what i wanted easily and the algorithm picked up on what i liked and what i didn't and brought me more of what i wanted.

And the big problem with open source Alternatives and the fediverse is that instead of acknowledging that these are issues that need addressing and usability could be improved. They will instead tell you that it's your fault and you should give up all of those nice interactions for the sake of being decentralized. It's up to you to put in the effort to search every instance ever and find the content you want and bring it all together, it's up to you to migrate as needed and deal with other things caused by the decentralization. I just want to find some nice art, talk about some interesting Tech stuff and avoid politics to relax. Bluesky and even to some degree reddit let's me do this easily, lemmy makes it difficult.

  • Anyone who genuinely thought that privacy was going to be perfect was an idiot. But they're going to be better than Gmail and they are. The only way to achieve any type of true privacy would be to start up your own Data Center , run your own email , and then be the one that's dealing with the government knocking on your door. Have fun with that.

Put frankly privacy on the internet does not exist and anyone that thinks it's achievable on the modern internet is honestly an idiot. We can only select the least shitty option there is no good option. And the problem is even that is a moving Target I'm not going to keep changing my email provider every couple years to whatever the new current popular privacy option is.

  • Ah yes be toxic to annoy people who are toxic. No irony there

  • All 3 users of systems that don't support 64bit will be devastated. Once they finish loading the news anyway

  • That is definitely one of the crowds but there are also people like me that just are sick and tired of dealing with python, node, ruby depends. The install process for services has only continued to become increasingly more convoluted over the years. And then you show me an option where I can literally just slap down a compose.yml and hit "docker compose up - d" and be done? Fuck yeah I'm using that

  • Only $1000? Most basic falling apart apartments are almost $2k in many states from what I've seen

  • Because they all use stealth bomber tech to hide them, duh. Idiots

  • The "this has been compressed 100 times" burn isn't helping any

  • I'm not saying that they aren't basically the antichrist. The problem is we need an actual good solution, just hard line telling people that this is evil so you should put in a shit ton of effort to not using it is just not realistic. It's not going to sway people, i do use nebula and floatplane which i pay for. They have their own problems but they aren't as bad as YouTube but more importantly they are usable.

It's very sad that the people that have the skills necessary to actually make something open are always also just so Hardline head up their ass about self hosting everything. I can self-host plenty I have piped, immich, jellyfin, frontend replacements for pixiv, imgur and others as well as my own pastebin. I'm no stranger to self hosting but that doesn't mean that I'm stupid enough to think that it's a viable way to get rid of YouTube it's just not

  • If i have to host my own instance and client to get usable results it's a non starter for 99% the population. I do want better than YouTube in terms of open and privacy but not if the only possible trade is removing all sense of usability

  • So it can be unwatchable with buffering every 5 seconds at 360p?

Love me some alternative self host but every time I've ever tried any peertube instance the videos are unwatchable due to the painful slowness

  • That is true but to be quite honest even the people that don't have LEDs are blinding me when they are at an incline to me. In either situation I'm putting my hand up to try and block it out till they pass

  • Only done poorly, which sadly is most cars, even new. They are aimed too fucking high. Headlights are meant to be aimed down at the damn road. Not up high for far reach. That's the point of highbeams.

I got projector leds for my car but i properly aimed them, the light has a sharp hard cutoff juuuuust below the windshield on Most sedans at distance to make sure I don't blind em. If i need more and it's safe I've got my highbeams which turn the road in even the darkest rural to noon.

  • Putting on raingear, while less miserable than not being in rain gear. Does not entirely save one from the annoyance and wetness of the rain. I did a LOT of biking in my teens in all conditions... I'm familiar with it lol

  • I mean for me it's comfort, I don't want to bike in the rain, or high heat, or snow... If you do then awesome that's great. So instead i just reduced my car footprint. Drive a smart fortwo which is one of the least polluting cars on the road and you can fit 2-3 into a standard parking spot (depending on orientation)

i know I'm in the wrong place for this but I wish people would focus on just trying to make people realize that they don't need so much car instead of fuck car entirely. It is much more likely to be a successful message in the long run and still beneficial

  • Downloading the torrent so i can seed it on 2.5Gb fiber
