I like art and being nice to people on the internet. At least most of the time. My previous account was Cris_Color before changing instances

Queer, gender-messy twink. Into crafts. Learning how to care for plants. Nerdy about fish and aquariums.

  • Yeah I guess its second best to being gay. Being gay is pretty great tho, so thats no discredit to learning 😌

  • I'm not saying its an overblown issue, I'm saying its disproportionately represented in a way that shapes our worldviews, and that does harm. That doesnt change whether you should call something out as wrong, it changes whether you should recognize the pattern and keep yourself grounded in an accurate understanding of the world. You cannot unpack your biases in a space that is constantly showing you evidence of your biases. The law of large numbers means there will always be a million and one examples of any given worldview, but that doesnt mean its accurate, and until you unpack the way your perception can be manipulated by the platform you're on you can't really work on any of those biases. You can learn to understand how the platform you're on shapes your perception while still considering it wrong if a woman does something shitty, or if anyone does something shitty.

Nor am I treating it as exceptionalism, I frankly don't even follow how that term would apply here.

I don't mean to be rude, but I can't tell if you're just not a great communicator over text, or if your ideas on this subject just don't make a ton of sense. Every comment I've had to read like 4 times to follow what you're saying and I don't generally have to do that

  • Took a some pics of us together for size reference :) I'd love for her to be bigger, but I don't wanna wait longer and not have long enough in the season for the peppers to mature, and honestly I'm a little worried she may already be big enough to catch a lot of wind and blow off the ledge 😅

I appreciate the advice though! My friend taught me about plucking the flower buds off when she gifted me my strawberry so I've been trying to do that! Hopefully I've done an okay job this year and she can still make an okay number of peppers :)

Plus when she was still more of a baby :))))

I wish I took a pic when I got her, she was teeny tiny 🥹

  • Thanks for the update :)

  • As a person with ADHD I feel like the fun part of learning is curiosity and the joy of discovery. School isnt very good at delivering on that experience. It kinda just tries to cram as much into you as possible, which is a bummer cause otherwise learning is like one of the most fun things in the world

  • I agree that online stores don't do it as well as in person ones (being committed to being in a specific place where you buy stuff I think makes people engage more intentionally and consider items in front of them), but I wish more people talked about how shitty SEO (search engine optimization) is one of the ways online stores do this, so I wanna take this opportunity to share that idea

Instead of having to walk to the back corner of the store to get milk or Christmas decorations, you have to scroll past a million items that aren't quite what you're looking for but are closely related by keywords. And in this metaphor the store can be infinitely big.

    I hate shopping online 🥹

  • (I'm not the person who down voted you)

Nobody said any demographic is exempt from people in it being shitty, thats not an argument anyone made.

I'm taking about the way that engagement based algorithms warp our perception and surface only things that generally receive certain kinds of emotional responses. In the cases where someone beats up a woman because she's being an antagonistic asshole, she's still being an antagonistic asshole. It wouldn't do well on the platform if she wasn't; it only performs well if people can feel righteous rooting for the man beating a woman up. If you were to believe reddit and the way the front page depicts reality, women are generally antagonists who are asking for it. If you go to the right parts of reddit you can watch a never ending feed of women getting their asses beat for being a jerk over and over and over, and it starts to feel like thats actually what reality looks like. If you believe the YouTube algorithm, women are all selfish entitled pieces of shit.

These are things that perform well in an engagement based platform, but by statistics and by being in community with women, women do not broadly go around antagonizing people and starting fights thinking they are beyond reprisal, they go around afraid the man walking behind them is going to assault them. But an engagement based platform the stories that reinforce peoples biases or are cathartic, or make you angry, or make you feel superior to those you hate, will rise to the top. Those videos consistently perform.

On YouTube watching court you see almost the entire ommision of naratives featuring men being abusive partners. But they often are. The only time you see videos whose narrative based on a male villain are generally when theyre part of different demographic people love to hate- like cops. You can see men or women both taken down a peg if they're cops. But if they're in court as a parent? The algorithm is showing you a mother who is kniving and spiteful and an obvious villain.

Engagement based algorithms do this because narratives of women being put in their place are vindicating to a segment of the population, and it normalizes that narrative as a depiction of reality to everyone else.

  • The money remained safely in cris? I was not aware of this... It really feels like someone should have told me...

  • I don't think anyone understands what you're trying to say

  • You gotta save the coup de gras for last, the beans are for dessert 😌

  • Lol, thats good to know!

I have a slightly better PC now, but still no money 😅

  • Maybe try making a post on one of the movies or shows comms (I'm not familiar with it and don't know if its a movie or a show. Though you can also just post where people are.)

c/casual_conversations can also be a place to chat

I think in some cases on the threadiverse communities just have to be more catchall, because there aren't enough people to congregate around a more specific topic. But there may be other people out there who would love to chat about that with you, even if there aren't enough for a specific community for the show

(Apologies if youve already tried this, I just had the problem solving thought and figured I'd share. If its not helpful thats okay :)

  • Someone explained that that exists and hasnt connected with people, but I think a big part of why it hasnt is that theres no real social drive to comment or engage with something if theres zero chance the poster might see it. It kinda feels like you're just speaking into the void, or talking to yourself

Thats how I feel about it at least 🤷🏻‍♂️ if a human reposts stuff at least you can chat with the reposter about it, if its the kind of post where that makes sense. If the post is a "hey look at this thing I did", the reposter can't really say how it went or discuss the experience

  • I think they might just be going for a play on words, but I could be wrong

  • So does a lot of the internet at large though. Reddit is especially bad but my other example was YouTube.

Reddit does have an especially big problem with sexism though

  • It definitely was 😅 I see sexism here more than any other form of chauvinism

  • 😏 If youre willing to come out of your shell we can uhhhh.... Fry you up nice and cripsy? Leave your yolk runny and season you with salt and pepper?

I'm not sure extending the metaphor works so good... 😶

  • Lol, I'm so glad you enjoyed it

I saw it on fetlife of all places (which confuses me cause like who in their right mind scrolls for so long on fetlife that you need a break. Fetlife is for seeing my friends naked and hearing they're doing well and then closing, not endless scrolling), and thought to myself fedi folks would enjoy it :)

  • I've pinched off a ton of buds already to get the plant to a size I feel decent about, I'm ready to let it start fruiting now. I considered letting it go longer but I'm worried about not having long enough for them to mature, and honestly I probably don't have a good place to put a normal 100% full maturity pepper plant while keeping it in the sun and safe from the wind. Nor do I have a big enough planter (I think I've heard people use like 5 gal buckets? Thats way bigger than I have a good place to put, I don't actually have my own balcony at my complex so its shared space on a ledge in the breezeway. I'm not technically supposed to have belongings there and a 5 gal bucket up on the ledge visible from the parking lot would be kind of a lot lol)

I am new to growing stuff so I have no idea if I'm at the point of blooms late, or early relative to what you'd want lol

  • Gardening @lemmy.world

Just saw my pepper plant has put out its first blooms! ☺️☺️☺️
