  • I'm pleased that you can conceptually see this "possibility", for lack of a better word. It speaks of creativity and imagination.

    That your conclusion seems locked-in on this possibility as the only solution, is needlessly below your abilities and shows mental rigidity or tunnel vision.

    Currency and Taxation CAN and HAVE been weaponized as you described, but so has a carrot. Just because a carrot CAN and HAS been used to stab through someone's eye and pierce their brain, killing them, doesn't mean that this is what carrots are for, or how public policy should treat carrots.

  • The danger in linking climate risks to dollars is making misleading math. The actual opportunity cost of climate disasters is incalculable/infinite.

    Add up all the potential economic activity for tens of thousands of years of a flourishing sustainable human civilization, and subtract it because we are risking ecological collapse and even possible near term human extinction. The numbers to measure the damage done in dollars suddenly require scientific notation and approaches infinity.

    In this article, they tried to measure only the past opportunity cost. Now multiply it by our future costs and you'll get a sense of how badly we fucked ourselves and everything else.

    I'm not exactly happy either as any military spending is a terrible misallocation of resources when our greatest threat isn't the Russian or Chinese. It's having exceeded our Planetary Boundaries.. Our military crisis is secondary to our ecological crisis. The rules based order and global trade was one of the better ways to fight these problems.

    But let's not pretend that we, as Canadians aren't directly threatened as are our real NATO allies. These costs are very reasonable under the circumstances.

  • Regrets there is blowback. When you are constantly on the wrong side of history, maybe the hollow apologies aren't enough and institutional change is required.

    Few are pleased with the state of policing. Corruption, egregious breeches of ostensible policing standards leave few "proud" of our police. This is what they will admit., but consider the source, and trustworthiness.

    It's not like the cops had a good reputation.

    ACAB. My ability to actually list the long line of egregious abuses pales compared to the monumentality of the task. It doesn't have to be this way.

  • Fair point. But how to distinguish it from unpopularity? If the "toxic" waste is disingenuous, bad faith, bot based flooding, we have the tools to suppress it. If something is just genuinely unpopular, you have to be careful calling it an echo-chamber. Lots of folks think toxic of anything that disagrees with their obviously superior opinions.

    There is no perfect answer. Garbage in, garbage out. Welcome to humanity.
