I went back to Redditβ¦
...And WTF events related to Karma led me to come back here, because Lemmy really surpasses Reddit on all points (even if it cruelly lacks users compared to Reddit).
On some subreddits, we ask to have a Karma in comments good enough on all Reddit to be able to publish one on the community in question (it happened to me on /r/iOSBeta). I donβt know you but these communities shouldnβt get involved in what I do on other Reddit communities, it doesnβt make sense.
Another problem is users who feel superior to others because they have a better Karma. There was a discussion on r/privacy that talked about alternatives to Fire Stick and Chromecast, and one guy had proposed Apple TV, another had replied that Apple was worse than Google and Amazon when it comes to data collection. So to this guy I told him that he would have to be a little clearer by giving evidence. And there, he answers me « Youβre a fresh 0-Karma account, you bring proofΒ Β».
Well, thatβs what Reddit is for me. A huge social
Do you use Pocket or other Read Later App?
I was thinking about Nothing Phone 2. Does the brand give off a good image in terms of privacy?
Wow, this is the most complete answer I have ever seen. But is it wrong if I stay at Apple? Are there any competitors on the Android side that are worth it (I am thinking in particular of a pixel on which GrapheneOS is installed)?
Find Twitter accounts on Mastodon
I am looking for an alternative to bird.makeup (Because it doesn't work anymore) that allows me to follow Twitter accounts on Mastodon. I saw on GitHub there was a tool called Touitomamout (https://github.com/louisgrasset/touitomamout) which is up to date and apparently does the job well but I don't know much about Docker. Is there an instant solution for me to follow Elon Musk on Mastodon π.
A little hardcore method in my opinion. This is especially if the instance is dying.
I agree, I myself am a programmer but hey not everyone is installing IDEs and game engines and Linux on their tablet. Steam could be interesting knowing that Apple authorizes alternative stores in the European Union. The iPad is not complete indeed, but it is just a consumer computer that targets people who do not want to complicate their lives as well as artists (Apple pencil).
Basically you go on Reddit (It is French on the image because I'm French), you click on "log in" and look at the connection options.
It's exactly like the "Connect with Google" feature but also "private" according to them. I don't know if it's a marketing argument or what but unlike Google they generate an alias email that is similar to what Proton does but for free. There is a Windows App.
Proton VPN NetShield
I'm curious to know what Proton VPN's ad blocker offers, but I don't see any videos or articles showing how it works. So I am addressing VPN users, because there is no free trial unfortunately to try it:
- Does it block Cookie's banners?
- Is it necessary for the VPN to be constantly activated to benefit from the block?
- Is it better than uBlock-Origin?
- When is the page loading speed consistent?
- On iPhone, does the battery take a hit?
No one talks about this feature even though it is highlighted by Proton themselves (https://protonvpn.com/en/features/adblocker).
Proton Pass VS Passwords App
This week, Apple released in the latest update of iOS and MacOS an application that is simply called "Passwords".
In my opinion, Apple could be a serious competitor to Pass: both provide temporary emails, both manage Passkeys, but what I think sets Apple apart from Proton is the "Connect with Apple" feature. Passwords are also encrypted (for Apple via the default iCloud Keychain).
Of course, Proton does not have the same financial income as Apple, which pushes them, for example, to ask to pay for two-factor authentication. But I stay with Proton because I simply love the values of the company but also because I have my emails, my calendar, my drive that are on Proton.
Now I think it would be interesting for Proton to work on an alternative to "Connect with Google" or "Connect with Apple". What do you think?
It is true that a real Firefox on iOS/iPadOS is missing. But otherwise you canβt say that your iPad is ONLY used to watch Netflix π€£ I mean, some people replace their computer with an iPad!
My opinion on Mastodon after 2 weeks...
Iβm not going to make a big paragraph to explain myself but here are the positive points:
- No advertising
- Diversified applications
- Very good freedom of expression
- Fedivers
- Verification (using a website)
Now negative points:
- I was sold instances that served as a mirror with X which would have facilitated integration into Mastodon for users like me. Only 2% of the accounts I follow on X are on Mastodon (Mozilla, Proton).
- There are not really « funΒ Β» accounts like https://x.com/humansnocontext that post funny video clips, I find Mastodon a little too serious, I see a lot of political accounts and sometimes the lives of normal people like mine. Itβs a shame π. I mean, I chose Lemmy because itβs so much more diverse!
- You cannot change your username. Itβs a shame about that...
Well, that was my opinion on Mastodon.
If you have recommendations, favorites of Mastodon accounts, share them with me.
Yes, thank you for answering the privacy issue. To be honest, I use Apple products but not so much iCloud. Iβm in the Proton ecosystem and Iβm waiting for Firefox to become less terrible than it currently is, otherwise in the meantime Iβm using Safari with AdGuard...
Why donβt you like Apple?
Real question. I would like to know what drives you to hate Apple? (In terms of privacy of course because in terms of price itβs another story).
I donβt know... I would have liked them to set up a system of instances like on Lemmy or Mastodon to remove the price barrier + lazy to pay an app β¬12.
Blogger Alternative for the Fediverse
[UPDATE] Thank you for your comments but I found that Write Freely was well on paper but not funny to set up (self hosting) and maybe a little dead. I found that https://bearblog.dev met the specifications well. Although it is not integrated into the Fediverse, it is free and respectful of privacy!
Everything is in the title. I am looking for a FREE alternative to Blogger but that allows me to share Blog articles in the Fedivers. I donβt like WordPress.com because it is very limited in its free version and not very transparent about privacy in my opinion unlike WordPress.org. In short, if you have any suggestions, Iβm taking it!
The site finds the Twitter user Iβm looking for but when I enter the link bird.makeup like elonmusk@bird.makeup on Mastodon it doesnβt find...
New on Mastodon
Hello, I hope you are well.
This is a very special period because I am migrating to the Fedivers. If Iβm talking to you here, itβs because you suspect Reddit is a first step! Now Iβve moved to Mastodon. I took the mas.to instance and I was faced with a problem: who to follow? So I was wondering if you had any content proposals that I could follow on Mastodon. I am strongly recommended to follow hashtags so I also take.
(I didnβt know it but thanks to ActivityPub I can follow Lemmy communities from Mastodon, if itβs not crazy)
It would be a solution in the short term but do people know how to mirror a Twitter account for free?
Thank you for making me discover the site! Regarding Peertube, itβs more complicated, itβs better to use Piped to continue using YouTube...
PeerTube on the idea is great but you have to be honest, YouTube is better. So this is what I did in this specific case to fight the bad Google: I registered on a Piped instance to continue watching videos without ads, without trackers, without sponsored passages, etc... and if you have an Apple device there is an app for that, itβs called Yattee.
I have a Mastodon account but honestly like PeerTube I like it on paper but there is only politics, so if you have accounts to recommend me Iβm taking.
Otherwise Linux Mint is really special I approve of your choice.
