Just use Tailscale for your VPN. If you want to be 100% FOSS self hosted, set up Headscale as your control server somewhere. It’s simple, secure, and has excellent performance.
EDIT: And also check what your upload speed is from your server. It sounds like you’re running off your home internet connection and many ISPs have terrible upload speeds, particularly for sustained traffic.
Except that it’s now harder to find a question answered from an actual person, because you have to join their Discord server, deal with the annoying pops in the ui, deal with a mostly broken search system that can’t find a discussion by topic since it’s just a chat log, and then either have your question either be missed in the conversation because it was asked at the wrong time and the person who knows it was asleep and now it’s scrolled into history or not get answered because they are tired of answering the same questions over and over again since no one can find when it was answered two days ago.
Meanwhile, I can go to an almost thirty year old forum and find that my question was answered in 1998, with nice updates in 2005 and a follow on in 2016.
Or I can ask AI.
I definitely have a ranked preference for those options and is sure as hell isn’t dealing with fucking Discord.
Of course, now it’s even worse because all of the discussion is happening is some shitty closed IM service instead of a regular openly readable and searchable forum.
When I first used it, it wasn’t so bad. Yeah, some people were egotistical about things but I could usually get a reasonable answer, and when I answered something before anyone else I would get an upvote or two.
Later, every time I asked a question (that I had spent a day or two researching and searching for an answer), within a few minutes my question would be marked as duplicate by someone with a jillion points, and the question that was pointed to as the dupe would have literally nothing to do with my question at all. Like, I would ask a question about clang internals and get duped as a question about the Windows networking stack.
And when I answered a question, with a complete well reasoned response with an example, it would get downvoted into oblivion while a poor answer from someone else with those jillion points would get a hundred upvotes.
EDIT:
And I know AI bad, but I can ask Claude the exact same question and get an answer with the exact file, line references and a decent explanation in a minute or two.
Debian on my severs and workstation. My laptop is also Debian, though I have a Haiku partition that has been a lot of fun to play around with. It’s way, way better than the last time I tried it.
The oldest iPhone that can run the latest iOS is the 11 from 2019. Apple is still providing security fixes all the way back to iOS 15, which goes back to the 6s released in 2015. So, somewhere between 7 and 11 years for Apple depending on what you are counting as support. As a personal experience, my partners iPad from 2017 still runs fine, though it is stuck on iOS 16 and only gets security updates.
Also, and this is the cheat code to all relationships, regardless of gender:, be interested in them. Ask them questions about themselves and their interests instead of just trying to impress them with how great you are. Even, maybe especially, if you think you know something about what they’re taking about, play slightly dumb and ask questions.
Yeah, I moved into software from electrical engineering. “Software engineers” are rarely doing engineering. Though, weirdly, the LLM-assisted coding methods seems to be leading to more of a focus on specs, design documents, and testing methodology, which almost makes it more like actual engineering.
The original Dracula is so good and the characters are so damn funny. You have the hero polycule consisting of a cowboy, a love stuck himbo, an autistic woman who’s special interest is trains, a romantic goth, a rich guy with a pack of corgis, an obsessive gadget guy and their adoptive eccentric uncle fighting against a man with a traditional harem he can’t keep happy and who spends half his time pretending to be his own servant to keep up appearances.
Oh I know, but that’s the only thing that’s more replaceable on a framework than on most Thinkpads. Other than that they are both equally repair/replaceable.
