Israel has declared its intent to expand into the geostrategic Red Sea Region by recognizing Northern Somalia’s secessionist state, but Somalia and much of the rest of the world are pushing back hard. No other nations followed suit and only the US was supportive.

There Is No “Somaliland”: Hargeisa Controls Only Half Its Former Territory

On December 26, 2025, in a move that sent shockwaves around the world, Israel announced that it was formally recognising “Somaliland,” a secessionist region in Northern Somalia that has been seeking independence since the collapse of Somalia’s central government in 1991.

However, “Somaliland” no longer exists within the boundaries it claims in Northern Somalia. The authorities in Hargeisa, the capital of “Somaliland,” control approximately 60 pe

Have you experienced drift or other issues with your original Steam Deck thumb sticks? Also, people who have replaced their thumb sticks, how has your experience been?

It's pretty common to hear about people replacing their thumb sticks to avoid drift in the future, but I almost never actually hear about people having drift or other issues with the original OEM thumb sticks (outside of the occasional person who broke their stick by dropping the Deck).

I'm also curious to hear what people's experience has been with replacing the sticks, both the difficulty of the actual replacement, if there were any issues after, and if they think it was worth it.

Breakfast for 25 people

Hey everyone! Once a year around mid winter, I gather with a group of about 25 people for the weekend, and we each pick up a task. Last year I did a breakfast, and I liked it so I volunteered again this year. I'm now looking for inspiration!

Last year I did a classic Dutch (we are Dutch) breakfast, with various breads, toppings like cheeses, meats and sweets (Yes we put chocolate sprinkles on our bread and call it breakfast), and fruit.

This year I want to do something a little different! Tell me about favorite things to make for a large group, tell me about its history, origins, heritage!

Drivers ranting about traffic enforcement

It's infuriating to me how often you see car drivers ranting and complaining about things like speed traps, and how common apps and traffic radio report these.

Drivers are probably the only group of people on earth who not only routinely whine about the consequences of their illegal actions, and attempts to enforce those consequences, without any broad pushback, but in fact get broad systematic support specifically designed to help them avoid these consequences.

Imagine if restaurant owners routinely complained about how "predatory" and "unfair" random health inspections, and fines for non-compliance are. Imagine if someone made an app that warned restauronteurs a day or two ahead of every health inspection, so they don't have to bother keeping their kitchen code compliant any other time. People would be outraged. But when drivers make those same complaints about speed cameras or traffic enforcement in general, and get those same systems to avoid them, everyone just accepts it as a c

sh.itjust.works Piefed instance?

Hi all,

I was wondering what people think about a piefed instance for SJW? I personally have issues with Lemmy devs and I think their reputation is a massive turnoff for many people looking for alternatives to corporate run social/forum services.

I understand that this instance is community run and resource considerations are probably an issue. No questions about that.

I was more thinking in purely theoretical terms.

How's everyone's holiday preparation going?

For many people, turkey day is tomorrow. If you're planning on making something, how goes your prep?

I've got a cornbread casserole in the oven, which has gone smoothly enough so far. However I do have to run to the grocery store to pick up all-purpose flour. Turns out we had less in stock than I expected, and we typically make a lot of cookies each year. Hopefully I'll be able to get in and out no worse for wear.

Edit: Sorry to everyone I didn't reply to. Seems there was some kind of federation issue with lemmy.world and I didn't see most of the comments until today.

Should this community also cover the Steam Machine and/or Steam Frame?

My initial thought is definitely yes for the Steam Machine, and maybe yes for the Steam Frame.

All devices are Valve made hardware running steamOS, so I would think a lot of the discussions/content would apply to Steam Deck. This also isn't a super busy community, so I wouldn't be that worried about Steam Deck specific content getting buried.

The Steam Frame is a bit more iffy than the Steam Machine though, there's a lot of experience differences between the Deck/Machine and a VR device, so there will be larger differences. Also the Frame has ARM hardware and has to use an additional x86 to ARM compatibility layer for games running on it, so we'll probably see some unique compatibility bugs for it.

Overall though I just want to hear everyone else's opinions on it.

Another preventable accident near our home

Someone drove into a family this evening. Two boys are severely injured. I'm shaking because it happened super close and it could have been anyone I know, or me.

There's a big proportion of absurdly dangerous drivers here in Mayotte. Most people drive okay, and there's a few fine & courteous drivers too. But this small demographic endangers everybody else.

On an island without curbs, where the rainy season makes every road muddy and slippery, where entire families routinely go to the mosque and back on foot twice a day, there's also dicks in audis, cunts in huge jeeps, and neither get the hint. It's small villages throughout, a few extended families, everybody knows everybody. The fucker is still being deincarcerated from his 2 ton metal box. You can be sure he will be shunned for the rest of his life. But that's a meager consolation. It could have been me, it could have been my wife, it could have been any of the kids I know from the neighbourhood,...

Technitium DNS v14 is released with support for clustering

Technitium DNS Server (TDNS) has gotten a new release with many awesome features: TOTP authentication, an upgraded .NET library, and many security and performance fixes.

But most important of all, it now supports clustering. A long-awaited feature, this allows Technitium to sync DNS zones and configurations across multiple nodes, without needing an external orchestrator like Kubernetes, or an out-of-band method to replicate underlying data. For selfhosters, this would enable resilience for many use cases, such as internal homelab adblocks or even selfhosting your public domains.

cars are so fucking stupid

Minor rant. I got new tires last year. Today i went to get my oil changed and while I was there I asked for my tires to be rotated. They found a puncture of a nail or something right on the edge so the patch would need to be on the side wall which no one does. The only place around that sold used tires doesn't do that anymore. If i wanted to get it fixed it was going to cost me $200 to replace the tire. I did not drive in any crazy places, just got unlucky enough that my personal 2 ton death machine found this tiny little piece of metal that I wouldn't have even had a chance to see and avoid, and got it stuck in a place that's apparently unfixable.

On top of all the ways car culture has destroyed our landscapes and controls our cities, the car is designed in such a way to be the biggest financial burden possible. What other thing do we have where you can use it as intended, but there's a decent chance for the equivalent of a splinter to make your hand stop working?!

Proposal to defederate from maga.place

I saw that a post was made in !main@sh.itjust.works about defederation about a month ago, an admin commented to make a post here to discuss defederation, but the post was never made.

https://maga.place/ is very obviously a small community with no real substance to it, but I saw an antivax post to !science_memes@mander.xyz and was surprised it still exists.

Anyways I don't really have a lot to say but uh, I recently hit a full year on this great instance 😊 (old account @TriflingToad@sh.itjust.works)

Android/Phone Alternatives?

With the advent of Google's draconian business decisions, do we have alternatives?

The entire reason I use an android phone is that it's just like a little computer where I can decide how it's used. I was wondering if anyone is familiar with other options.

I remember the PSP with its 3g modem that was a fun novelty. Are there any modern devices like the OpenPandora that could be suitable?

Most of my paid apps are through alternative markets so I'm fairly sure with some effort I could get them running on a Linux device.

I thought about using a laptop but it wouldn't have the same convenience to answer calls asap from my pocket. I'm also unsure if it's possible to use tools like Google maps to navigate.

My apologies if this isn't the appropriate community. I'm hoping that because this likely affects everyone here it's the right place for this discussion. Thanks for reaching the end 💜

Task (HBO)

Anyone else watching HBO's Task? What do you think?

I started watching last week and finally caught up with the latest episode (ep 5). I personally like it. There is only one plothole I'm annoyed about, but I think overall it is executed well. Acting is also great.

Israel can't stop - The Mizrahi Perspective

Very good insight into why Israel (and the USA) act the way they consistently have for decades, and why they can't (and won't) stop.

If you have any interest at all, I strongly recommend this video. It is worth the ~40 minutes.

Watch it at 1.25x playback speed if you must, he does take time to collect his thoughts.
