lemmy.dbzer0.com now protected by Haphash Proof-of-Work

Ahoy m@tes, the scraping bot situation has been escalating recently, as you all may have already noticed by the recent site instability and 5xx error responses. @tenchiken@anarchist.nexus has been scrambling to block new scraping subnets as they appear, but these assholes keep jumping providers so it's been an endless loop and constant firefighting.
I finally had enough and decided to onboard a Proof-of-Work countermeasure, very much like Anubis which has been very popular on the fediverse lately. However I went with Haphash which has been especially designed around haproxy (our reverse proxy of choice) and is hopefully much more lightweight.
The new PoW shield has already been activated on both Divisions by Zero on Fediseer as well. It's not active on all URLs,. but it should be protecting those which have the most impact on our database, which is what was causing the actual issue. You should notice a quick loading screen on occasion while it's veri
Intermittent instance slowdowns and errors
Hey peeps, it seems out instance is suddenly experiencing some intermittent slowdowns, and the occasional 503 error. Typically this means we're being hit with a GenAI scraping wave and these things tend to come and go until we can trace where the load is coming from and stop it. Unfortunately I'm currently AFK so until @tenchiken@lemmy.dbzer0.com can come online and take a look, we just have to live with it. Until then, I suggest you switch to our tesseract frontend, as it seems to be slightly more resistant in my experience, so you might not notice this as much. Alternatively you can use anarchist.nexus to keep browsing the threadiverse from the flotilla.
PS: blame stamets 😜
how do i federate with this instance?
I just made a new instance but I have no clue how to federate with others like you, an inclusive community and see their posts and such. Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask
Kbin.run down
From this post (https://sopuli.xyz/post/15865566) on !AskMbin@fedia.io
It’s very likely related, but we also figured out that both of debounced’s (the admin of kbin.run) accounts on GitHub and Matrix were deleted last night. So there is a possibility that kbin.run is no more.
Deciding the fate of c/snoocalypse - tell me what you think!
I wish to stop being a moderator in lemmy.ml. However, I don't know what to do with this community; the last time I asked for new mods nobody showed interest. So I'd like the help of other members of the community to decide it.
Here are a few options:
- Migrate this community. Frankly I don't care about Reddit nowadays, but I'm still willing to mod a comm about it in another instance. So if users tell me "migrate SNOOcalypse to [instance]!", I'll seriously consider it.
- Recruiting new mods. If you wish to be a mod, please tell me so in this thread. I'll check if you'd be a good mod, recruit you, step down myself, and you're free to moderate it as you wish.
- Closing down this comm. There are a few other comms about Reddit across the Lemmy/Kbinverse, so we'd use those instead. If neither of the alternatives above is viable/feasible, this is likely what's going to happen.
- Something else. Then please do tell me. As long as it doesn't boil down to "negligently leave this comm
