Very cool. Difficult to pull off with SDXL, but looks like they did it!

I’m thinking Kontext or Nano banana would be a more ideal workflow for this.

That could be very easy to do potentially with SD 1.5, especially with Mistoon (my PFP was actually made using Mistoon Diamond with 1Shot and Almonds LoRA). I'll look into this later, especially since Vtubers are rigged using things like Live2D, NijiGenerate (Inochi2D fork), and Inochi2D. I wonder if that could work for Vtuber shenanigans, given what I've said, though....
