Somebody You Used to Rule
Tell me it’s not just me.
It's so funny she didn't wanna release it properly but then it blew up through no real effort of her own years down the line and people kept asking her to do a proper version over and over. So she did what people wanted and now people won't stop giving her shit for it. You really can't win with the internet nowadays
I've seen so many people saying that the reason they hate it so much is cos it's overused on tiktok and stuff. Ok so...is that her fault? It's also funny that people complain she didn't do anything different with the instrumentation when the Gotye original's is him sampling a song from the 60s and actually making it far simpler and less interesting
the Gotye original's is him sampling a song from the 60s and actually making it far simpler and less interesting
So... its distinct from the sample origin and stands as its own thing? Which is what people have a problem with the new song not doing?
Yes but as I say he made it far simpler and less interesting. So it's not like he's gone on and done some great musicianship with it. It's as close to just doing the same thing whilst still doing something that's it's own thing as can be. People are acting like she's taken his instrumentation and ruined it or something when it isn't his, for the most part. And to make it clear I don't think either of those, what Gotye or Doechii did, is a bad thing inherently. I personally like both songs. I don't get why people are so up in arms at her about it
I enjoy both. 🤷
And bring shame to your family as a result.
Just kidding. Like what you like.
That’s ok they spent my entire childhood instilling shame in me. I’ve spent the last 20 years breaking free of that and liking what I like. :)
So it's a melody you used to know, huh
Had to look up the other song since I hadn't heard it yet. You're not kidding Doechii took the music and just inserted her lyrics. The whole song sounded like Somebody That I Used to Know with her doing bad karaoke.
I was gonna say "gotye heavily sampled Seville by Luiz Bonfá", but then i saw that she put in a fucking reference to gotye's music video in her own music video so.. yeah.. that's pretty fucking egregious..
it's not just you
I just hear twinkle twinkle little star
I prefer Anxiety
Boooo
As a Clash enjoyer, its lucky that Paper Planes by M.I.A is also a banger
Ice ice baby
Never heard it but.. it was enjoyable
Is no one gonna post a link? I'd never heard the song before. Anxiety by D whoever https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=riCP9x31Kuk
Oh, I see, this is much better than the Gotye song, no wonder people are upset
Uch.
My 10 year old had me hear this. Anxiety is an abomination to the original song.
It's hells bells and for whom the Bell tolls. If there's more than 2 bells, I know it's going to be AC/DC and immediately switch the station.
It's literally just Twinkle Twinkle Little Star with some extra notes
Twin-kle twin-kle li-i-i-tle star how. i. won.-der. what you are
No one gives credit to Brahms smh
And in minor tonality, but yes.
What was the story with that by the way? I mean it's not a sampling it's straight up the entirety of the other song with new lyrics. Did she get permission? Was there a lawsuit? I never heard.
Gotye sampled it to begin with, so he couldn't sue. He couldn't even make money off the original song for that reason, but he seems pretty chill about stuff like that.
Based on other comments, it sounds like Doechii wasn't trying to release Anxiety as its own song and just made it for fun, and then her fans kept requesting she record a real version of it.
So the story is that some people's hobby is just to hate things.
Gotye sampled Seville but it's definitely not the entirety of the song, the first part of Seville was wholesale copied and the rest taken heavy inspiration from.
You can absolutely hear that Somebody that i used to know is based on Seville, but you can also hear that they're clearly distinct songs.
This song is so bad.
I thought I was going insane, or the radio was playing some weird hackney version to get around copyright. (They have some cover or something of 'I'm Blue' and its tripping me up.)
I fucking hate Anxiety. Especially the shitty rap ending with 'quiet on the set'. removed, no-one was talking you attention hog.
Never heard of either of em.
me neither
So I was obsessively reading this manga about fish with legs: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gyo
And the bonus manga with the Steven Universe human sized holes in the sides of mountains. This was before Steven Universe as far as I'm aware. ::: spoiler spoiler The holes were not from incubated crystal gems. :::
While my mom was listening to the earlier song OP's talking about on a loop while working out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8UVNT4wvIGY
So the two are linked in my head as if the song was used in a trailer for a movie adaption of the manga. It was a while ago, like summer of 2011, but that's what popped in my head the second I saw "Somebody I used to know".
It's weird how both songs have the same intro but the new one sounds relatable. Oh, after watching the full music video for the new one it seems that the new is clearly a homage to the original:

That's cool. I'm glad they made it. They even have the people covered in the background art standing against the wall. =D
I don't get the hate, i think it's a pretty good song ! Better than somebody i used to know
Its fine to like it, but I can't agree that it's better. STUTK was never that much of a hit for me, but it feels more stylistically focused. To me the rhythm of the vocals and melody are a mismatch in Anxiety - I don't want to argue about this, as this is subjective taste stuff, Ive heard much worse too
For me it's Hells bells tricking me into thinking it's Discovery by Daft Punk.
For me its the David Guetta song instead of Blue by Eiffel 65
As a Gen Xer, for me it's when Ice Ice Baby fakes me out when I think it's going to be a Queen banger
For me, it's the other way around
[That meme with two hands clasping]
Not "for whom the Bell tolls" by Metallica?
It probably is and I'm misremembering.
Seeing the name automatically makes me think of the entirely different song with the same name by Elliott Smith.
