Current Federation

Lemmy.world has slandered Hexbear.net's name by accusing us of being a brigading troll instance, after days of requesting evidence they have provided none. After raising the concern that the largest lemmy instance is slandering and poisoning the well of smaller instances I was told that I was creating drama and that my only recourse is to make a post on hexbear.net, I am also asking the users of hexbear please do not harass lemmy.world or their mods/admins as well as asking hexbear users not to make lemmy.world accounts/delete any lemmy.world accounts you may have due to opsec/privacy concerns

With the cumulative updates Users may show/hide avatars, show/hide scores, show/hide NSFW content, show/hide read posts, show/hide notifications for new posts, block users, block communities, report direct messages, mods can distinguish a comment to sticky it to the top of a post. Users may set their feed in their account settings to determine if the default feed is local (hexbear.net only), subscribed (user subscribed communities only), or all (all posts on unblocked communities on federated instances).

Hello users of Hexbear in the next couple of weeks (exact date will most likely be somewhere around the 5th of August) we will be taking the site down for approximately three hours to update to lemmy 0.18.3 and begin federation., as we prepare for federation we wanted to create a primer for etiquette when engaging in the fediverse.

Please read and respect the rules of the community instance in which you are posting/commenting. Please try to keep the dirtbag lib-dunking to hexbear itself. Do not follow the Chapo Rules of Posting, instead try to engage utilizing informed rhetoric with sources to dismantle western propaganda. Posting the western atrocity propaganda and pig poop balls is hilarious but will pretty quickly get you banned and if enough of us do it defederated. Realize that you are a representative of the hexbear instance when you post on other instances.

Breaking the hexbear code of conduct on other instances will result in mod action here.

Know that your posts, comments, and DMs involving communities/users of other instances are stored on those instances databases, while delete requests are sent there is no guarantee they will be honored, especially if a different platform is involved (mastodon, etc).

In addition, a reminder that you may set your feed or search to local/subscribed/all and block users/communities to have a greater control over what content you have. Local is Hexbear only, subscribed is communities from hexbear and federated instances that you have specifically subscribed to, and All is hexbear + all federated instances. There will be a pinned post in the !hexbear community where you can nominate instances for our allow-list or block-list.

In closing, I want to remind everyone that the moderation policy of Hexbear communities will not change and will be strictly applied to any users from a federated instance. While we are not responsible for moderation policy of remote communities our admins do see reports you make of posts/comments on federated instances, and we are able to remove them, while not actually deleting the post/comment it does hide it so Hexbear users cannot see/interact with it.

Here is the list of instances we will be federating with at the beginning:

Mastodon for Sickos, this is the unofficial mastodon instance. Perfect for microblogging with the ability to send local only toots.

A collection of Marxist communities, for memes, learning, news, discussion, media, or anything you like.

This is a statement from the news megathread crew:

First and foremost, this site and the news megathread's user base are not a monolith, and there are frequent discussions about who to support and to what degree. Nonetheless, we nearly universally acknowledge that the West's role in the world, through organizations such as NATO, the IMF, and the World Bank - among many others - are deeply harmful to the billions of people living both inside and outside of their imperial core, both militarily through wars of aggression and coups, and economic means, giving them unpayable loans, imposing austerity, and applying sanctions to keep these countries in permanent debt peonage. These organizations constitute the modern imperial order, with the United States at its heart - we are not fooled by the term "rules-based international order." It is in the Left's interest for these organizations to be demolished. When and how this will occur, and what precisely comes after, is the cause of great debate and discussion on this site, but it is necessary for a better world.

We do not, as a site, have an official line regarding Russia's invasion of Ukraine, and a wide variety of viewpoints are represented in discussions. This includes many users with varying degrees of support for Russia, which some people may find confusing or objectionable. To understand this perspective, it is essential to understand two things: the historical context that led to the invasion, and theoretical concept known as "critical support." Critical support means that we acknowlede and recognize a nation's flaws, and do not uphold it as an example to emulate, yet we believe that the nation's success is in alignment with our goals. While Russia may be a capitalist country, it is still a thorn in the side of the modern imperial order, but on the other hand, whle Russia may be a thorn in the side of the modern imperial order, it is still a capitalist country.

Understanding the war in Ukraine requires understanding that neither history nor the war began in February 2022, the Ukrainian government has been at war with its people since 2014. The Maidan protests started with many legitimate grievances but were heavily backed by western funding and support, especially to the right-wing groups that overtook the movement and accomplished the coup of the Ukrainian government. The people whose democratically elected candidate had just been removed by the western-backed coup were unhappy and many did not recognize the new illegally appointed government as legitimate. This group was especially prevalent in the eastern part of Ukraine and formed the basis of the separatist movement (always referred to as "Russia-backed separatists" in western media). The new government in Kyiv attempted to suppress the separatist movement with its army but the army refused to start shooting their own countrymen. This led the Kyiv government to turn to far-right paramilitaries like Azov, Aidar, C14, Right Sector, and Donbas battalion in order to attack the people of Donbas, these paramilitaries were later folded completely into the Ukrainian military. Crimea was spared this fate as it was annexed by Russia and didn't have to deal with 8 years of war. Multiple ceasefires, including Minsk 2, were brokered by Russia and European nations and signed by the Ukrainian government but were then simply ignored and the shelling of Donbas continued for 8 years. While Kyiv was waging war on its own countrymen with far-right paramilitary groups it was also promoting the far-right within itself. Stepan Bandera, a Nazi collaborator and genocidal murderer, was made into a national hero. His birthday was made into a national holiday and the street near the Babi Yar monument, a monument commemorating the largest Nazi massacre in Ukraine, was renamed in his honor. Far-right people were placed in high positions in the military and police. Politicians ran under the slogan "Military, Language, Faith". Official use of the Russian language was suppressed, despite it being the majority language among eastern Ukrainians. The Ukrainian people still desired peace with Donbas and Zelensky ran as a peace candidate, however after he won he refused or was unable to stop the the shelling of Donbas. In 2022 Russia recognized the Donbas Republics as sovereign states, Ukraine responded by further escalating their artillery attacks on the Donbas Republics, Russia responded with the invasion of Ukraine.

Hexbear is unwaveringly supportive of LGBTQIA+ rights and we unequivocally denounce the reactionary laws enacted in many countries in the anti-Western bloc, including Russia, Iran, and others. It is worth noting that some countries in this bloc are experiencing positive trends towards social progress, such as Cuba and Venezuela, while some countries in the Western bloc have either never supported LGBTQIA+ rights, or are experiencing a backslide. Tragically, some people have the perception that LGBTQIA+ rights are a Western export, ignoring both the bigotry that exists in Western countries, and the long history of LGBTQIA+ people in non-Western countries. The war in Ukraine, however, is not being fought over LGBTQIA+ rights. Neither side upholds these rights, nor will victory or defeat cause them to change their laws. The battle for LGBTQIA+ rights around the world is, as it has always been, really fucking hard, but if we make the mistake of trusting the imperialists to have our back, we will soon find a knife in it.

  • From the lemmy thread:

I can appreciate the phased in approach. I just selfishly wish the hexbear users mixed in with the orthodox liberals doing all the worldnews and politics posting ever since the huge influx of users from reddit.

Warms my heart and I can't wait to get back into the posting trenches

  • Deleted my lemmy.world account after getting called a "troll" multiple times just from one post pointing out that Germany had a serious right-wing fascism problem that we should all take seriously

I seriously don't know what's wrong with those people but it's very reminiscent of r/Europe back on reddit where weekly they would just insult ethnic minorities and none of the reddit admins apparently thought mocking minorities and spewing racist slurs was against the reddit TOS

They feel just like StormFront users back in the early 2000's just slightly more tame

  • Oh, geez. I was under the impression we were gonna start with lemmygrad and maybe one more explicitly leftist instance. I sincerely believe it is a mistake to federate as broadly and quickly as we are, especially with the very lib default ones like lemmy.world.

  • The more I see posts about Lemmy instances and dig around to look at other posts, the more I think those communities are absolute fucking garbage.

    • I think we're primarily different because we were forcibly, coercively booted out of Reddit and ended up building Hexbear more or less in the dark beyond the stars. A few years of struggle sessions and in-jokes lead to a cohesive, enthusiastic site culture. We already had absurdly strong posting relative to our numbers, where as many of the other Lemmy instances came much later and came from much less rabidly and ideologically coherent origins. We're just a very different community from a lot of Lemmy instances. Add to that - After Spez broke the reddit strike a lot of people probably limped back to reddit.

  • The statement

Lastly, we as a community have many people in the LGBTQIA+ community. As such, we unequivocally denounce the reactionary language used and laws enacted by many people and countries in the anti-Western bloc, such as Russia, Iran, certain African countries, etc.

implies that if we didn't have an LGBTQIA+ community that this statement wouldn't be made. I would like to hope that even if Hexbear was 100% straight and cis users (perish the thought!) that we would still denounce this reactionary language.

    • As literally the only instance with visible pronouns that people don't have to stick in a hidden bio page because other admins are cowards I think people can see for themselves we have a shitload of queer folk and treat marginalised groups better than anywhere else. I think Blahaj comes pretty close to Hexbear but they're obsessively anti-tankie which drives them rightwards like it always does, I've seen both ableism and anti-homeless classism there, that's not to say it's completely bad but you know how it is.

    • I think an instance without queer people would be do different from the hexbear we know and love that I don't think this is true. queer comrades fought struggle session after struggle session to push this site into the stance it has today. we forget that history at our own peril.

      • I have to agree sadly, I remember the struggle sessions. I'm mostly pointing this out because the way I read the text makes it sounds like it was made begrudgingly by straight users at the demand of our queer users, which is obviously not the truth. We are a united front.

  • Hi all, we've updated to lemmy 0.18.3 now.

During this update, I've taken the liberty of removing my admin privileges on the site; I never used them in any official capacity, just to help debug things while we were doing the big migration. Since that's done, i'm back to being a regular user :)

Federation is now being enabled. If you are not interested in seeing any federated posts, you can toggle the Post listing to 'Local' or 'Subscribed', instead of 'All'. Also, if you interested in federated instances that use a different language, like French, you will need to go to your User Settings page and make sure to enable the French language in order to start seeing them. By default, all users have English and Undetermined languages enabled.

  • If lemmy.world has already blocked us, what does that say about other instances?

I've heard before that lemmy.world vows to only defederate with instances promoting hate, but that never seemed convincing to me considering we were banned from reddit for "promoting hate" against slave owners. Saw this coming for a while.

I don't know much about other lemmy instances, but it's looking to me like the only stable federation we're going to get is with either lemmygrad or lemmies with extremely small communities that aren't very active.

  • Hyped for federation!

:::spoiler However, I'm not a fan of the statement on Russia. I assume that's for users coming in?

Overall, it's ok as a draft but it needs some revisions if it's going to be an official statement. Like if I saw it as a comment it'd be whatever but a statement should be held to a higher standard, and I wouldn't sign off on it as it stands.

Idk if this is the proper place to give feedback of if I should head to the news mega or what.

NATO provoked Russia into this conflict as they could not accept another major power on the European continent; they wished to destroy Russia economically and politically to take over and then loot the country for cheap resources; and to put further pressure on China, the West's true enemy

I'd say it has more to do with needing a new threat to perpetuate endless war in order to justify increasing defense spending which lines their pockets. Are we claiming that NATO expected/expects to be able to take over all of Russia and loot the country? That's just silly.

Ukraine, however, is not innocent, containing fascist paramilitaries with a very significant degree of de facto power over the country. Ukraine, however, is not innocent, containing fascist paramilitaries with a very significant degree of de facto power over the country.

While this is true, fascists merely existing in a country doesn't justify invasion, and no evidence is provided in the paragraph for the claim that they had "a very significant degree of de facto power over the country," only that they exist. There's tons of historical context that's way more important and relevant to the conflict, like: the Minsk agreements, Ukraine's shelling of Donbas before the war, the Euromaidan coup, and the banning of opposition parties. None of those things are common knowledge. Together, they point to a conclusion that the real status quo was that Ukraine was a neutral country, and then the West intervened to bring it to their side, against the wishes of the people of certain regions, which provides more of a justification for Russia to seize control of those regions. The move to become NATO-aligned wasn't based on any sort of democratic vote, and the Ukrainian people had no nonviolent way of resisting that move because any party that resists it was banned. Right now, it's kind of impossible to know what the Ukrainian people want, without negotiating for some kind of armistice and mutually recognized referendum (like that'd happen lol).

Suppose you strongly oppose this invasion for its cruelty and thus support the West. In that case, it is worth looking at any of the wars which had involvement by the United States and NATO (Yugoslavia, Libya, Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, etc.), even limiting yourself to the last few decades, and comparing the deaths, destruction, and long term consequences. Doing so is not "whataboutism", it is basic principled consistency.

Don't like this framing at all. First off, if you oppose the war for its cruelty, then you shouldn't be supporting the West because the West had a hand in starting it (you just said that)! Second, the fastest way to end the war would be one side accepting the other's conditions, or at least being willing to negotiate. Ukraine/the West have been unwilling the negotiate, while putting forth unrealistic demands, like the return of Crimea, which was under Russian control before the conflict even started. Obviously, we as citizens have more influence over our own government than we do over foreign governments, so living in the US, I consider it more important to criticize the US position on this, though I wouldn't begrudge a Russian leftist being more critical of Russia.

But all of what's said here plays right into the "whataboutism" line! I hate this line of argument, especially to be deployed on libs. It makes war out to be some kind of team sport. It's not even really related to the conflict, because Ukraine didn't invade those countries! Also, this sort of thing was already brought up in the first paragraph so bringing it up again is redundant and makes it look like that's our only line of defense - that's just bad writing structure, if it's included at all, the two sections should be merged.

Putin is not a fundamentally evil person - and, indeed, many people inside Russia openly criticize him for not being even tougher on Ukraine.

I don't think this is necessary to include. I don't have any stake whatsoever in defending Putin's character as a person, and tbh I kind of despise him personally due to his transphobic views. If someone wants to call him "a fundamentally evil person" I wouldn't necessarily agree but I'm not about to leap to his defense. Honestly, he's a prick. His personal character isn't relevant to my stance on the war.

  • I am also asking the users of hexbear please do not harass lemmy.world or their mods/admins as well as asking hexbear users not to make lemmy.world accounts

Wouldn't people already have accounts? Like, the instance was created months ago. Everyone will have made accounts then there's literally zero need for it now. If they didn't want socialists joining their instance, on a platform made by socialists, they should have made it explicitly clear from the start that they were a right-wing only instance.

It is fucking wild that they would not only ban socialist instances but also demand left wing people don't join their instance. What exactly are they expecting the outcome of this to be? If you persecute and repress the left you move your space to the right, the far right. If you want a center-ish space you need to actually be neutral, dumbasses.

No one has ever fucking brigaded you. There's literally no need for that, what you're fucking missing is that all the liberals that aren't ideological nutjobs don't like it when you do this shit, so they're speaking up about it too. You've literally split your community in half with the biggest self-own ever and set this reputation for yourselves. Nobody did it for you.

  • Please try to keep the dirtbag lib-dunking to hexbear itself.

    yes. i will try.

Also I'm glad it's a small list of instances. At one point someone showed a massive list of instances where a bunch had like 3 posts and that's just silly. There's no need to federate with completely dead Lemmys. Just invites wreckers IMO.

  • Due to my commitment to democratic centralism, I will no longer be anything but positive about our federation.

So anyway, what's the difference between the link button and the funny little rainbow pentagon button below comments? They seem to do the same thing.

  • Not sure if this is the right place to report this, but direct links to comments are all borked again after this update (0.18.3). Similar to last time (that was quickly fixed) but worse. Sometimes following a link to a comment takes you to a comment at the very bottom of the chain. If you click "show context" it doesn't take you up one comment in the thread, it just reloads that bottom-most comment again without any context. I also noticed a long comment chain that when it got to the second round of "X more replies->". Clicking that just re-added the last few comments and the same "X more replies->" button, making for an infinite thread of the last few comments and another "X more replies->" button each time.

Thanks as always for the hard work updating the site, admins and @makotech222@hexbear.net. I hope federation turns out to be a good thing.

  • I'm getting big Berlin Wall falling for Germany reunification, Iron Curtain tearing down for USSR liberalizing, and China opening up markets vibes

Excited to be here for this
