I like that you can tell the artist was very offended by someone else saying they were offended by something, then turned around and made a racist portrayal of the global south. A perfect ouroboros of being offended over people getting offended by your offensive content.
And you are in that ouroboros it seems. Ironic.
Observing that a work of art is racist doesn’t mean you’re offended by it in the way the comic is talking about. It’s offensive because it’s racist, not because I’m particularly offended by it. As far as racist works of art go it’s mid at best, both in art quality and shock value of the racism itself.
Considering this particular work of art racist though, it's being offended by it.
There is nothing actually racist about it, I could even argue it's the opposite of racist, but probably it's neither.
Whatever it is, it did its job judging by your reaction.
Sorry, I don’t think you’ve given the art proper thought or analysis. It being racist isn’t really debatable: the clothing and jewelry the woman is wearing isn’t connected to a specific region or ethnic group, it’s just vaguely exoticized and othered. I assume the artist was going for a head wrap, but it looks like they have zero idea of what that actually looks like and made a turban instead (typically male headwear). The background also portrays a stereotypical drought scene, with a harsh sun and parched grasses, implying famine along with the thin, sickly, half dressed child. Not even touching the fact that these caricatures of black people in the global south suffering were being used as puppets for the artist’s soapbox, not to say anything meaningful about the lives or needs of the caricaturized people being portrayed.
None of that required “being offended,” that’s just how thinking and analyzing art works.
If you’re missing the racist overtones here it’s because you’re either ignorant to them or so used to it that it didn’t even register.
Thank you for your service
I'm actually having a good chuckle here at how offended you are. Calling this racist is also a bit far-fetched. The artist is using stereotypes to make fun of a shitty parenting technique. Try being less offended and don't over interpret a 4-panel Internet comic.
The comic is still shit though. Not funny in any way. They should probably have gone with America being in a similar or worse state than many central African countries in terms of political corruption and exploitation of its population.
"I'm not offended"
proceeds to write wall of text about how it should be offensive
You can see bait and acknowledge what it's trying to do without engaging with it on its artist's terms. Do you disagree with the above commenter's assessment? You seem really stuck on a specific point, trying to paint people as offended when it's really just a matter of identifying what's there.
I am just acknowledging that the poster is continuing the ouroboros of being offended.
Do you want to join them?
anyone who engages critically with media is automatically offended
How do you remember to breathe?
People like them vote and that is deeply unsettling
I just took an art history class and spent months writing thousands of words analyzing elements like colonialism and racism in artwork. That was a first pass, basic analysis. How TikTok fried is your brain that a basic rundown of the visual elements of an artwork shuts you down? Literally less than 200 words??
So you basically took a class in finding things offensive?
MRW chuds don’t understand or value the humanities: 😲
This would be a more accurate depiction
