The Racist South playing the long game
Years ago, there was a big write-up (cannot find it any more) on the idea of Northern Liberty vs. Southern Liberty, and it was totally spot-on.
Every American should read it because it really laid out the difference between the way cons with the Southern mindset spoke about "liberty" - in their use of this, liberty meant the right to RULE OVER OTHERS. Which is completely at odds with the normal/Northern interpretation.
When I used to link to this article and mention it on various forums, including DP's I'd get butthurt cons saying how unfair that characterization is/was. LOL.

We can’t acknowledge the whole country was racist in in the 1800s? the country kept black people as slaves. All kinds of industry in the north benefited from the materials produced by slavery even though they didn’t personally own the slaves
Lincoln himself said if allowing slavery would preserve the union, he would do it.

The thing about the north that I've learned that surprised me is how many abolitionists held that belief because they didn't want black and white people living together. They wanted an ethnostate.
Yeah, there was a whole movement to get them to move to what is now Liberia (or Haiti, or Panama). Even Lincoln supported the idea. Although, he did eventually abandon the idea due to, among other complications, his refusal to implement any plan that made it compulsory, so... at least there's that?
He also wanted them to move to the Moon. Right?
