I understand DIWhy is more for things that, no matter how well built they are, just shouldn't be done at all.
This is something that should be done.

They why bit is, in my opinion, because the sink is meant to be dropped into the hole in the counter top to help keep moisture away from the underside.

Most sinks are installed on top because it's easier and cheaper, but some are installed underneath because it looks better.
