It was 1993, when AOL started offering Usenet access. It never got better from there

It's actually refering to "Eternal September" in 1993 (not 1994) when AOL gave its users access to Usenet, flooding these previously academic/tech communities with newbies who didn't know the etiquette - essentially marking when internet culture began to be permanently diluted by mainstream users.
