I'm baffled the Tolkien estate didn't sue them into oblivion for using the name.

I know, but given that when we see them in the series they're exclusively used by Evil, its... it just floors me

And the whole reason they're evil is because the most powerful person who has one gets to choose what all the others see. I'm sure there's no metaphor there.
