I know that it is a trans symbol, but I couldn't find out why. Is there an actual reason or was it just chosen randomly?

From what I can tell, bit of both. It started as a meme on Tumblr, gained popularity because it's easily available worldwide (wherever there's an Ikea), and became gay because Tumblr big gay. The colors nicely matching their ::: spoiler socks
::: made it more popular among a certain subset of the community, and now everyone agrees it's a symbol of trans (support).
