I know nothing about canadian politics, but Fanjoy looks like he is having a lot of fun and joy. 😺
To give a bit of context. The person in second, Pierre Poilievre, is the leader of the Conservative party and campaigned for Prime Minister of Canada. Canadians don't vote directly for Prime Minister. The country is divided into a few hundred ridings and each riding gets to elect a Member of Parliament. The party with the most MPs gets to form government, and their leader becomes the Prime Minister.
Not only has Poilievre failed to win enough seats for the Conservative party to form government, he might not even win his own seat. A seat he has held for 20 years. It would be embarrassing for him and hilarious for all the Canadians that think he's a dickhead.
Thanks for clarification!
not even win his own seat
As in he won't be elected as a member of parliament because not enough people voted for him in his region?
He wasn't elected.
Results are in.
Bro for real?!
CBC shows P.P. as defeated.
Singh also was defeated.
The co-leader of Green too. Jonathan. May still held hers.
Oh an Maxime didn't get a seat either :)
A little sad about Singh, but c'est la vie.
Greens: well that's a result.
Fuckin perfect that Maxime didn't get a seat AGAIN.
I think it was Singh's time TBH. He brought the NDP as far as he could. Hopefully the new leader will do better.
So, Canadians did want change.
Well you could say they didn’t want the kind of change where the whole country gets gutted and sold for parts.
Perhaps I'm a cynic, but a hell of a lot of us do want that apparently. I'm stoked about the lib minority, but saddened by how many of us still voted conservative.
Yeah it’s way too close for comfort, but it isn’t realistic to completely change the political landscape in one day or one election. I think with a bit of context, this is a huge win for the liberal party. A few short months ago they were projected to be completely wiped out at this election due to the previous leader’s unpopularity. That has not happened, and they have emerged with a new and recognisable leader in what looks to be a significantly stronger position. The important thing now is to limit the damage, and take back control of the narrative imo. Can’t get complacent - this is a clear step in the right direction, but needs to be followed up. Peace and congratulations I must say x
I have some cautious... optimism? Eh maybe the wrong word, but: The sudden change in polls because of Trump isn't going to evaporate easily. The man and party can't shut up, and "if" (when, IMO) all the Nazi fears come true the youth bleeding over to conservatives will be watching too for the next 4 years.
Relief / amusement / congratulations
Read that in Mass Effect Elcor voice. Sorry lol.
I read it more as HK47 from kotor tbh
Hahaha that works too.
Correct, but it's not uncommon for party leaders to evict someone else from their party who did win in order to have a seat
Lol, so you can have a number of fake members who get elected so you always get people that you like in parliament?
I think the actual mechanism is that a Conservative member in a safe riding (very unlikely to lose to another party) would step down, triggering a by-election, and the party leader would run as the new Conservative candidate.
There's a chance he would lose again
Exactly!
I'd say I'm a fan of his.
