about geo-tagging posts
about geo-tagging posts
so a few months ago i wrote about geo-tagging posts.
the idea is that you can add a geo-id: tag to every post that kinda represents the physical location of an event. so for example when it's a post about some news in australia, you could add geo-id: australia to the post. then other users can filter posts by physical proximity, i.e. if you're living in australia, it's gonna be more relevant to you than if you live in canada.
(for practical reasons it would be cool if you would only have to add that tag once, to the community where it's posted in, and then every post kinda gets that tag automatically.)
then there could be a custom setting in the lemmy settings that says "only display local news" that filters out everything that is more than, let's say, 300 km from the "your own location" that you enter in the settings. This could be a client-side setting so that your physical location would never have to be revealed to the lemmy servers at all.
what do you think of this?
