Surely they can see the malformations? Perhaps they convince themselves that its beauty, in the same way they see greatness and and worship a child rapist.
I knew a woman years ago who was probably the prettiest woman I've ever seen in person. The only things about her that could even be mildly considered "flaws" were a slight bump on the bridge of her nose (which I thought only enhanced her beauty) and b-cup breasts (and I actually prefer smaller breasts, like millions of men do). However these two "flaws" drove her insane and she got plastic surgery and breast implants after saving up tens of thousands of dollars to pay for it (she was not rich by any means).
The first time I saw her after she healed up, I literally started in horror. She not only had the nose bump scraped, she got her nose entirely reformed into a little button, comically large cheek and chin implants, and the bee-sting lips which were already collapsing and asymmetrical. The D-cup implants were just absurd and probably looked similarly horrific naked. Apparently she had also gotten liposuction for no reason. And for the icing on the cake she had gotten eyeshadow tattoos, a hideous dark purple.
She went from being a beautiful, fit 33-year-old to pretty much a monster. I can't even imagine what she looks like now 15 years later. But according to our mutual friends she thought all the surgeries were a fantastic success and she was incredibly happy.
The western worlds societies really do maintain pressure on women to have disproportionate negative views of their faces and bodies. A LOT coming from the wider industries around women from magazines, salons and media includng social.
You know how the saying goes "Horrible stupid people flock together and support even the worst human traits just to get a taste of being a horrible waste of life"

My poor cuticles hurt too much to read further.
Edit: Is there a word for wiki-splaining?
Aren't cuticles things that cover the base of the fingernails ?
They are the pieces of flesh that I remove from the bottom of my claws when I am nervous.
